Checklists and Pulse Oximeters in Moldova

A recent study conducted by Atul Gawande and colleagues implemented the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist and pulse oximeters in a hospital in Moldova. Pulseoxes are critically important devices, because without them, doctors don’t know if their patients have normal oxygen saturation levels. Despite their low cost, pulseoxes are in short supply throughout the developing world. Gawande demonstrated that the WHO checklist can be implemented in a resource-limited setting, and can significantly reduce surgical hazards and complications.
