Off to San Diego for IDWeek

So IDWeek starts tomorrow in beautiful San Diego. This is the main conference for infectious diseases doctors nationwide, and this is the first time I am going to attend. The week is jam-packed with lectures, poster sessions, schmoozing, etc. Plus since it is held in San Diego there’s going to be lots of catching up with old friends/colleagues. I lived in San Diego from 2008-2011 while completing internal medicine residency at UCSD and still have lots of fond memories of the place, especially Tijuana. That’s my only piece of advice for people who don’t know San Diego. Bring your passport and go down into Mexico, even if just for 2 hours on Saturday morning or afternoon. Look at the map beforehand and walk around the downtown area of the city. It’s safe. It will open your eyes.

I am going to miss my wife and 11-month-old son in Boston, especially after just being gone for 5 days in Peru, but we’ll all deal with it. What are your thoughts regarding the most high-yield sessions at IDWeek? Right now I’m thinking the following, but could be swayed in another direction. Am also posting some other events below so I stay organized and make the most out of a very short trip:

  • Wednesday
    • Late breaker on Legionella in NYC with my EIS classmate/friend Keren Landman
    • Ebola Plenary (but I’m going to be on the airplane at that time)
  • Thursday
    • Challenging HIV cases (with Pablo Tebas)
    • MDR Organisms: Emerging Issues in Epidemiology and Control (Dan Diekima)
    • Chip Chambers lecture, “Resisting Resistance”
  • Friday
    • How to write a publishable manuscript (Paul Sax)
    • Implementing Infection Prevention Practices in Diverse Acute Care settings
    • ID specialists in the midst of health care reform
  • Saturday
    • Difficult cases in tropical medicine (Joe Vinetz)
    • White coat debate: Mike Edmond
  • Sunday
    • Closing plenary: Pandemic influenza (again, will be on an airplane)

Drop me an email, please. Also, lets try to get the Twitter folks together as well sometime, #IDWeek2015.

Writing blog posts does take time. If you found this post useful and wouldn’t mind leaving a comment/sharing on social media, that would be great. Thank so much! Best regards, Phil

I took this photo in June, 2008. This is Pacific Beach, San Diego. I had just driven across the country from Kentucky to San Diego and was about to start internal medicine residency.
