Ahimsa (a.k.a. nonviolence) means ‘not to injure’ and refers to a key virtue in Christianity, Jainism, Hinduism, etc. Ahimsa applies to all living beings, including animals. Regarding nonviolence, my main interests are the benefits of a vegeterian diet and the abolition of nuclear weapons. World leaders need to reject the dangerous notion that nuclear weapons enhance national security. Instead, they should base their policies on the understanding that these weapons are the greatest threat to our survival. Even a “limited” nuclear war would put 2 billion lives at risk because of disruptions to the climate. The US and Russia can join and provide leadership to the international movement for a treaty to prohibit these weapons.
