Last week at the meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine, Drs. Gordon Guyatt and Steffie Woolhandler gave excellent presentations about single payer health care. Dr. Guyatt emphasized that Tommy Douglas’s 1962 work in Saskatchewan was critically important to the development of the Canadian health care system. JAMA Editor in Chief: Health Care is a Right

Dr. Howard Bauchner, in a laudable JAMA editorial, wrote that “health care is a basic right for every person, and not a privilege to be available and affordable only for a majority.” And yet, I was left hoping for more.
